Today, I went to Asia.

I just wanted to let you all know that I made it to ISTANBUL. Legit. This city is monstrous and it covers two continents! Crazy. So, I started off the day in Europe and then flew into Asia and now I'm back in Europe. Basically, I'm just a world traveler extraordinaire.

More blogging to come later, we're going out to dinner soon.

Good morning Kristin: It's a beautiful one here, as I hope it is in Istanbul! What an exciting place to be! I am looking forward to your posts describing hat you are doing and observing.

Becausse there wasn't much to read in this post, I delved into your commentary on Gelato. There's a wealth of info there! It's a lot like the huge choice of ice cream flavors we have which presents problems when I step up to the counter at the counter! L n K Nanny

How is it that you went to Asia and back to Europe? Need to study up on my geography apparently. Didn't realize Istanbul covers 2 continents, didn't even know that was possible.

I have LOTS of cake left. Can't wait to share it with you when you come home next week. Oh and Dad made some AWESOME (and I mean seriously AWESOME) homemade jam and biscuits this morning.

Thoughts on Gelato

Fragola (strawberry): a good standby, always delicious. I like it better when it is not super smooth but I don't like whole chunks of strawberries in it. It's always good, though.

Limone (lemon): also good, very refreshing. It went well when I paired it with strawberry.

Mango: delicious! I don't like actual mangoes very much but I like mango-flavored things, and this was fantastic.

Pesca (peach): good, but had a funny texture.

Mirtillo (blueberry): the shocking discovery that mirtillo was blueberry left me very excited. I liked it quite a lot.

Mora (blackberry): delicious, tastes exactly like a blackberry.

Lampone (raspberry): fantastic. One of my favorites so far.

Cioccolata (chocolate): good, but I almost think I like chocolate ice cream better.

Cioccolata fondente (dark chocolate): SUPER delicious. I would recommend it, for sure.

Stracciatella (basically vanilla with chocolate chips): fantastic everywhere we've been. I really, really, really like it.

Cioccolata bianco (white chocolate): good, but I don't really like white chocolate that much, I don't think.

Tartufo: this was one of the most delicious things ever. It was apparently a mixture of like 7 different chocolates or something and it was super delicious.

Rome away from home

So, I just realized that those of you who read my blog might not actually know what I'm talking about half the time. I thought I'd give an overview of what I'm doing here in Rome!

I'm currently studying abroad with the University of Washington's Honors Program. We are in Rome for about four weeks and then we move on to Istanbul and we have a complete lack of free time because we're taking three classes while we're here. The first, taught by Lisa Schultz, is an art history class. We started with Ancient Rome and have already made it to Michelangelo. It's based on site visits with student presentations at most of the sites. Basically, we just wander around Rome and look at amazing things. Class number two is taught by Kathie Friedman and is called "Migration, Markets, and Minorities." We're looking at immigration in Italy and Europe in general. I've started volunteering at a refugee center for this class and we're exploring the immigrant neighborhoods in the coming weeks. Our last class is called "Islam and Italian Cities," taught by Resat Kasaba and we're looking at cross culture influences evident throughout the history of Italy.

So, the moral of the story is, we're always busy. But it's a good busy! We're doing interesting things and really getting involved in the city. You can always check out the program blog for more information (or to keep tabs on my life, whatever works) here.
